War of 1870
About 1,000,000 shells used, more than half of which were in the Paris region.
World War I
1,455,000,000 shells fired along 700 km of front lines, i.e. about 15 million metric tons of metal and explosives. 10 to 30% of them did not detonate correctly. 2 to 3% of these munitions are chemical.
World War II
22% of bombs dropped during WWII were dropped over France, i.e. approximately 600,000 metric tons, 10% of which did not detonate. To this are added several million shells fired from June 1944 to January 1945.
In order to accompany project owners, the French Union of Explosives Clearance Trades (SMDPYRO) has created a Guide for public works operations, prerequisite studies and clearance works on soils liable to contain unexploded ordnances (UXO).
